Usually, when a Sikh boy reaches a certain age, from the ages 11years old to 16years old, a turban ceremony, called the Dastar Bandhi, is performed for the child. This ceremony can be held at the Gurdwara or at any place where the Guru Granth Sahib is present. Moreover, family and friends are customarily present.
At this ceremony, Ardas (a sikh prayer) is recited and then the child's first turban is ceremonially tied on by the Granthi, or a Sikh elderly person. This ceremony's strength is that it designates the respect with which the turban is regarded. The weakness, however, for this ceremony is that some children may not realize the importance of this ceremony.
